Editing Multiple Word Documents in Assistant
Learn how to edit multiple documents simultaneously within a single Harvey workflow.
Last updated: Apr 8, 2026
Overview
Batch document editing lets you make edits across multiple documents at once. Instead of updating each file individually, you can ask Assistant to apply edits to a suite of documents with a single prompt.
Supported File Types
- Word (.docx)
Before You Start
- This feature requires Claude-enabled features to be turned on for your workspace.
How to Use
You can either upload one document and generate multiple versions from it, or upload multiple and apply changes across the set.
1. Select Documents
From Assistant, select Files to upload documents or select files from your workspace.
Tip: Ensure all selected documents are appropriate for the same type of edit. For example, similar agreements or document types.
2. Define Your Instructions
In the prompt text box, enter clear, specific instructions describing the edits to apply. Well-structured instructions improve both accuracy and consistency.
Tip: Select Improve to automatically enhance your instructions.
3. Generate Edits
Submit your prompt to receive the following:
- One thread with multiple new files
- An Export option for each file
4. Review
After processing completes, review the changes.
- Open each file to review the tracked changes
- Make additional edits if needed, either directly or by asking Harvey follow up questions
- Download documents individually or in bulk
Note: If you prefer, you may download the new documents to edit in Word and leverage Harvey’s Word Add-in.
Optional Steps
These steps are not required to edit multiple documents simultaneously, but often enhance the quality of Harvey’s response.
1. Add Context
After uploading documents to Assistant, add additional files or sources for Harvey to reference as context. For example, select sources to add web search if you want Harvey to reference data from the web in its edits. Or, upload a file containing information Harvey should reference when generating edits.
Tip: Be sure your prompt includes instructions on how the additional source(s) should be used. Use @ to easily mention a file name.
Notes & Limitations
- Quality results require clear and specific instructions.
- Documents that are very different from each other may produce less consistent results.
- Larger or more complex document sets may take longer to complete. In general, stick to no more than 5-10 files per prompt.
- Always review AI outputs before final use.
Tips for Success
- Start small: Test instructions on a few documents before running a large batch
- Be explicit: Clearly define what should change and what should stay the same
- Refine: Adjust instructions based on initial results and evaluate the impact of those changes
