Creating Export Formats

Ensure every export matches your firm’s formatting standards with ease.

Note: This is an opt-in feature, visible only once an admin creates a publicly shared format.

The Export Formats feature allows Harvey admins to upload and manage custom formatting templates for Word exports. Whether it’s applying branded letterheads, standard fonts, or firm-specific headers and footers, you can now ensure every document exported from Harvey reflects your internal style guide—no manual cleanup required.

What You Can Do With Custom Export Formats

  • Upload your firm’s Word .dotx or .docx templates.
  • Apply pre-approved formatting to document exports directly within Harvey.
  • Standardize headers, footers, fonts, margins, numbering, and more.
  • Eliminate the need for manual formatting after export.

How to Setup a Reusable Format

Follow these instructions or view our video tutorial below.

  1. Navigate to Settings within Harvey.
  2. Select Export formats in the left sidebar.
  3. Click Create Format either in the middle of your screen or the top right corner.

  4. Enter in the required details:
    1. Name
    2. Description
    3. Visibility settings
      1. Private: Visible to only you
      2. Public: Anyone in the workspace can export files with this export format
    4. Upload either a Word Template (.dotx) file or a Word Document (.docx) file (this will be converted to .dotx automatically by stripping out the contents and preserving formatting only).

    5. Click Upload and map.
  5. You will be prompted to choose formatting based on the template you uploaded. Click Save.
    1. Note: This step helps Harvey correctly identify and use each type of text styling in the document. Any unmapped styles will be ignored.

This format is now available to all users during export, allowing them to choose from your organization’s pre-configured formats.

Creating a Formatting Template in Word

If your team doesn't already have a .dotx template ready, the simplest option might be uploading a well-formatted document. Otherwise, you can create one in MS Word by following these steps:

  1. Start a New Document and switch to Print Layout view in Word to access headers, footers, and accurate page layout.
  2. Use the Layout tab to configure page size, orientation, and margins.
  3. Add a Header or Letterhead. Insert a firm logo using Insert > Pictures, resize as needed, and use Different First Page if your letterhead only applies to the first page.
  4. Edit the following text styles to ensure consistent formatting for paragraphs, headings, and lists.
    • Normal (Body Text)
    • Heading 1, Heading 2, etc.
    • List Paragraph
  5. Use File > Save As, then choose “Word Template (*.dotx)” as the format.
