Release Notes
Improved Redline Detection on PDFs
Harvey now automatically detects and extracts redlines from uploaded documents, improving accuracy and reducing manual review.
What’s New
Harvey now automatically detects and extracts redlines whenever you upload a file. This applies to both PDF and Word documents, with improved accuracy across common formatting patterns.
Automatic Redline Detection
- Redlines are detected immediately upon file upload
- No manual configuration or setup required
- Extracted text reflects insertions, deletions, and moved content
File Type | Detection Method | Supported Redlines |
|---|---|---|
Visual formatting detection | Insertions, deletions, moved text | |
.DOC / .DOCX | Microsoft Word tracked changes | Insertions and deletions |
PDF Redline Detection Rules
Harvey identifies redlines in PDFs based on common visual conventions:
Insertions:
- Blue text with underlines
- Blue text paired with red strikethrough text
Deletions:
- Red text with strikethroughs
- Any strikethrough text (except green)
Moved Text:
- Green text with underlines or strikethroughs
Word Document Detection
- Detects insertions and deletions created using Tracked Changes in Microsoft Word
- Maintains alignment with how changes appear in the original document
Why It Matters
Redline review often requires manual comparison and interpretation across formats. This update standardizes and accelerates that process.
- Reduces manual review time: Automatically surfaces changes without side-by-side comparison
- Improves consistency: Applies clear detection rules across documents
- Supports common workflows: Works with standard PDF markup and Word tracked changes
- Scales across documents: Processes every upload without additional effort

How to Use
Redline detection runs automatically — no setup required.
- Upload a PDF or Word document into Harvey
- Wait for processing to complete
- Review detected redlines within the document output
Tip: Use extracted redlines in downstream workflows (e.g., summaries, comparisons, or analysis)
FAQs
Q: Does this feature require setup or configuration?
No. Redline detection runs automatically on every file upload.
Q: What happens if my PDF uses different colors or styles?
Harvey only detects redlines that match supported patterns. Non-standard formatting may not be recognized.
Q: Are comments or annotations detected as redlines?
No. This update focuses on text-based redlines (insertions, deletions, and moved text), not comments.
Q: Do I need to enable tracked changes in Word?
Yes. For Word documents, only changes made using Tracked Changes are detected.
Q: Can I edit how redlines are classified?
No. Detection rules are predefined to ensure consistency across documents.
