Overview

Harvey's Word Add-In allows users to make changes within a Word document by modifying existing text or adding new content.

Users can obtain these suggestions either by prompting Harvey (e.g., "make this more advantageous for my client") or by uploading precedents (e.g., Harvey will find relevant clauses in the precedents and suggest edits based on those clauses).

The add-in enables users to edit by highlighting text (with or without sources) and draft new — giving the user options as to how they would like to make edits to clauses within their document.

How to download and install

When downloading the Word Add-In there are two Add-Ins to choose from depending on the URL of your workspace.

Using Harvey for Word

Harvey's drafting add-in allows users to refine language in favor of their represented party by suggesting edits directly within a Word document. Users can prompt Harvey to enhance clauses by using natural language (e.g., "make this more advantageous for my client") or by uploading precedents for reference, which Harvey will analyze to suggest relevant changes. To apply drafting edits:

  1. Highlight the text or clause to be edited.

  2. In the Query box, prompt Harvey for suggestions or upload a precedent.

  3. Review Harvey’s suggestions, which may draw from proven language in past precedents, and choose to apply them to the selected clause.

All edits applied are reflected as tracked changes within the document.

Highlight Editing for Customized Suggestions

Users can prompt Harvey to suggest edits tailored to the selected text. Harvey considers the specific legal context, jargon, and instructions provided by the user to generate precise suggestions. Users can apply these edits one by one, with each change tracked in the document for easy review.

Highlight Editing Using Precedents

Users may upload precedents to guide Harvey’s suggestions. By doing so, Harvey can automatically suggest changes to clauses, ensuring they align with successful language from past documents. When drafting or reviewing, leveraging proven precedents helps streamline language, ensuring efficient, consistent results. Users can review and selectively apply these precedent-based suggestions to achieve optimal outcomes with greater confidence.

Example: If a strong non-solicitation clause is needed, and previous agreements (e.g., ABC123 and DEF456) have proven effective, Harvey will suggest edits that incorporate similar language. This approach enables drafters to rely on language with a proven track record to meet client needs.

Insert New Content (Drafting)

Harvey can also generate new content by creating text from a prompt without requiring highlighted text. Users can place the cursor where the content is needed, provide instructions, and Harvey will draft accordingly. Please note that precedents are used only with highlighted text and not for new content generation.

Reviewing Suggestions

To finalize changes, users can select "Review Suggestions" and either accept or dismiss each suggested edit. Accepted changes are applied as redlined tracked changes in the document, while dismissed suggestions are not applied.

View your references

Once suggestions are generated, you can also choose to view the specific references within the precedent documents for review and confirmation
